Child Safety Reforms
The sector is undergoing scrutiny following the news that charges have been brought against a child care worker in relation to child sexual abuse allegations. Both the Commonwealth and the Victorian Government have committed to reforms, with the Victorian government set to produce a report by August on key regulatory changes.
This web page is dedicated to supporting organisations to take immediate necessary steps to mitigate risk, help prepare for legal reforms and equip them to take a proactive approach to keeping children safe. We will updated content regularly, so please check in for the latest updates.
We are expecting the reforms will add to existing legal frameworks and serve to underscore the need for childcare providers to act proactively and comprehensively and to be aware of emerging risk—not only to meet their legal obligations, but to uphold the trust families place in them every day.
What Organisations are affected?
We expect reforms to touch on all parts of the early childhood sector, including long daycare/childcare, sessional kindergartens, occasional care and school ELCs.
Information and Resources for Organisations
To assist Organisations to understand the reforms, the risks and potential impact on their operations and their governance obligations we have developed the following articles and resources covering:
- Operations
- Governance
- Legal Reforms
Operations
In the aftermath of these revelations, families, educators, employers and policymakers alike are grappling with urgent questions: How could this happen? What safeguards failed? And most importantly—what must change to ensure children are truly safe?
Governance
It is appropriate for board members of all organisations that care for and educate children to reflect on their role in creating and maintaining safe environments.
Legal Reforms
The Victorian government has announced a review of the sector and is expected to release its report and findings on 15 August 2025.
